What is hypnotherapy?

So, what is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a combination of psychotherapy techniques and hypnosis. On its own, psychotherapy is extremely helpful and beneficial; the application of hypnosis further enhances its effects.

Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand

Hypnotherapy is not something that is ‘done’ to you; unfortunately, there’s no magic wand! It’s important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are ready to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.

So, what’s psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is often referred to as a ‘talking treatment’.  There are many different kinds of psychotherapy, all of which aim to help people overcome stress, anxiety, depression or other emotional problems.

The good news is that the psychotherapy techniques I use don’t involve talking about or analysing problems, or things that have happened to you in the past.  If you have experienced unpleasant events, we acknowledge that they happened and then help you to move forwards.

What hypnosis is…

We all experience hypnotic states in our everyday lives. Have you ever driven home and not remembered part of the journey? Or become so engrossed in a book or a film, you haven’t noticed time passing? If so, you’ve been in a natural state of ‘focused attention’ or a ‘hypnotic trance’.  During hypnosis, you’ll be guided into a similar relaxed state where your subconscious mind is more open to beneficial suggestions.

Clients often comment about how ‘ordinary’ hypnosis feels – it’s not unlike daydreaming – you can often hear everything that’s being said whilst being in a deeply relaxed state, and you’re completely in control.  In fact, you could think of hypnosis as guided daydreaming or guided visualisation.

What hypnosis isn’t…

Whatever you might have seen in films or on TV, hypnosis doesn’t involve the therapist taking control of your mind! No one can hypnotise you against your will or make you do anything you don’t want to.  Your subconscious mind would simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate or not beneficial for you.
